Volunteers
The Southern California Marine Institute Volunteer program is designed to introduce individuals to marine science careers. Volunteers will learn basic operations at SCMI’s marine facilities including supporting our aquarists. We are looking for individuals interested in marine science, marine biology and animal husbandry. Note that this is not a glamorous job! Prepare to get wet as you roll up your sleeves and dive into the daily operations of our marine station. You must be 18 years or older in order to volunteer.
SCMI offers volunteer positions year-round.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Animal Husbandry
- Aquaria Upkeep
- Life Support System Maintenance
- Water Quality Testing
- Facilities Upkeep
- Marine Science Education
Applicant Requirements:
- 18+ years of age.
- Prior experience successfully maintaining saltwater aquariums is preferred.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Applicants must be able to bend, climb ladders and steps, and be on his/her feet for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
- Willing to work in cold, wet, dirty environments with strong fish and filtration odors.
- Able to work with sharp knives, utilizing fine motor skills to cut and prepare frozen and fresh seafood items.
- Minimum commitment of 4 hours/week.
